The 2008 Season...

A Gold Award made to the community of Falkland in the previous season by judges from Europe’s Entente Florale signified a great deal of effort required as we faced those from Britain in Bloom in the summer of 2008.

After a good start, the weather then proved quite unhelpful and a couple of days before judges arrived the torrential rain that fell saw flooding in the village and several others in Fife. This was the only campaign in which the community was involved and we felt it difficult to know whether we had kept up our usual standard. Any fears were dispelled, however, when our representatives attended the awards ceremony in September at Chester and we found ourselves winning the Large Village category with a Gold Award.

Additionally the community was given the inaugural Local Roots Award for the way in which we showed how we celebrated our heritage and history, while the work undertaken by Secretary, Bert Allan, was also recognised.

Some time later we discovered that we had been invited to participate in Britain in Bloom’s most prestigious Champion of Champions category in the current year. This means achieving Gold Standard in each of the next three years and will unquestionably entail even more effort by voluntary groups, as well as the usual support of residents and business owners.
