The 2009 Season...

At the end of a difficult year for our group following the untimely death of Bob Maxwell, representatives attended the Brittain in Bloom Awards Ceremony in Torbay, Devon, on 23rd September.

To see through a successful season, volunteers had been required to undergo a steep learning curve and there was a little during a period where Bob's wealth of experience had been missing and his huge workload had to be taken up by others. With Bob's widow, Jean, ready to play a guiding role, everyone believed that Bob would have wanted our group to honour its entry in the campaign and the eventual announcement of results in Torbay exceeded all expectations.

Figuring in this year's prestigious Champion of Champions category, Falkland recived a Gold Award and were pronounced winners over the two other communities which were awarded Silver Gilt. Additionaly our community recived a Discretionary Award for Youth Involvment, with the judges commenting on how the local Primary School, and boys from House of Falkland School had played their part in backing up the huge amounts of work undertaken by the Fide Air Cadets Conservation Group in the community.

To reach top places in this most demanding of the Britain in Bloom awards categories is quite an achivement and all the organisations helping make Falkland the community it is, can feel justifiably proud of the part they have played.

Already, work is going ahead at Sugar Acre in preparation for the season ahead as additional difficulties are faced in preparation for a second year in this demanding section of Britain in Bloom campaign for 2010.
