| Falkland in Bloom celebrated the 20th. Anniversary of its existence in some style during 2007! An unseasonal April saw high, summer-like temperatures but May, June and July proved to be three of the wettest months on record. As the judging season approached, however, the displays appeared to have done better than simply surviving and our community seemed splendidly colourful. Once again local judges decided the village was best in its category in both East Fife and Fife Wide and after the visit of Beautiful Scotland judges and those from the Entente Florale, we awaited the presentations in Dundee and Harrogate in the hope that results would prove pleasing. |

The Scottish Awards announced in Dundee's Caird Hall came first and we were delighted to learn that we had again retained the titles of Best Large Village and Best Scottish Village. Additionally we were awarded the Reserve Rosebowl as runners up to North Berwick who were classed as best community in the whole campaign. Shortly after, we visited Harrogate and travelled to the magnificent surroundings of Ripon Cathedral for the awards made at three levels to entrants. Having won a Gold Award from Britain in Bloom for our efforts in 2006, we were quite delighted to find that the European judges had decided we were worthy of the same standard after their visit to Falkland and full of praise for all they had seen. A special anniversary year concluded with, first our Community Awards to local gardeners and business owners for their horticultural efforts, then a Social Evening attended by past members of the group and invited guests.
At this function, Keith Jackson's twenty years as Chairman of our group was marked with the presentation to him of a suitably inscribed Caithness glass decanter and glasses. The event proved so popular with those in attendance that it will be repeated in the year ahead. |
A final gesture to further demonstrate the support given to our community by Fife Council, came from Lady Provost Frances Melville, who invited Falkland in Bloom members and volunteers to a Civic Reception in Fife House to mark the season's achievements. This proved a most fitting culmination to a very special year for our group.
