West Loan...
From its inception, our group has always been conscious of the need for sustainable planting. Last spring brought a long awaited start to the improvements at the West Loan, on the edge of the village, where an untidy shaded area behind the last houses in West Port was built up with several tons of top soil. Plants suited to growing without the need of sunlight were planted there to enhance the look for visitors to this area and give the site more visual appeal.
Following this up, a strip along the Loan's north side was rotovated and planted with shrubs and plants that will be colourful and also support wildlife. Further planting of native species including rowan and birch is planned for this year. Beyond the waterfall where bluebells, foxgloves and wild iris were planted in recent years, a hedge of mixed native species planted last autumn is already growing well, with self-seeded sycamore trees removed to create further improvement.
