Bob Maxwell...

Bob Maxwell

A sad loss for the community and for Falkland in Bloom accompanies the passing of one of its best known residents, Bob Maxwell, who died suddenly on 21st February aged 77.

Linch pin of Falkland in Bloom was a term well deserved by Bob and as the group's Polytunnel Manager , last year saw him and his wife rack up some nine hundred hours between them as they tended the needs of the 50,000 plants raised in two tunnels. The work of germinating seeds, potting on, and daily watering as well as making up 260 baskets and filling all the containers that brighten the community, along with countless other tasks, was taken in their stride in a season that stretches from March till October. Bob was an acknowledged expert in all matters horticultural and his practical step-by-step approach to preparing hanging baskets and best practice in caring for plants has been demonstrated to large numbers of gardeners anxious to be party to his expertise. These helpful tips are now recorded on CD that brought welcome revenue to help fund Falkland in Bloom's many projects each year.

After a working life spent in farming, Bob's practical approach to all he undertook smacked of his long experience and he was the first to be consulted when problems of such a nature required to be tackled. A keen bowler, he also tended the needs of the local bowling green which boasts a surface admired by all who visit to play in Falkland.

He richly deserved to be recognised at more than merely local level for the merit of his many qualities and the industry he displayed and it was expected that he would be interviewed as a candidate for a forthcoming Alan Titchmarsh television show. His warmth and pawky humour, as well as the huge contribution he made in the community, will be sadly missed by everyone in Falkland.
